The Epona Approach

“When you use your entire body as an organ of perception, you embrace the world and sense our place in it more
deeply” Linda Kohanov; founder of The Epona Center and author of The Toa of Equus, Riding between the Worlds
and Way of the Horse.
So what has this got to do with horses? By being in the presence of horses they remind us how to use these
forgotten tools. Horses are prey animals, they use their gut and heart to read potential predators and use
emotions simply as information to assess whether to gallop to safety or go back to grazing.
“Body language” is a lot more sophisticated than we think. Psychologists have determined that, even in humans,
90 percent of communication is non verbal. Emotions play a big part in these non verbal interactions sending
information to the heart, gut and brain. Horses read body language and emotions in order to thrive; horses
speak volumes, none of which is through words!! We do too, most of us are simply not aware of it: We have been
conditioned to ignore the body and concentrate on what is being said, using only our brain.
This is experiential work, meaning you learn and remember by “interaction". Horses have an amazing ability
to mirror back to us our greatest joys and biggest fears; there is no judgment from the horse when they share
so it is easier for people to accept the reflections they receive.
Horses share insights with us by tapping into the deep “inner knowing” embedded in our bodies. Physical illness and troublesome emotional thoughts or patterns can sometimes be cleared with, a gentle effortless touch of their muzzle to your cheek or heart. These deeper issues may be difficult for us to hear or understand and may not even be apparent to a fellow human being, yet the horses know and help us to develop self awareness.
NO horse experience is necessary. Some people are drawn to our workshops because of their “fear” of horses. Children can learn skills creating strength to deal with stress and conflicts. Parents and Couples can learn new ways of interacting for healthier relationships. Corporations can learn new information about team management and leadership, creating a sense of true collaboration thus a better “bottom line”. Learning these tools brings phenomenal awareness and “ah ha”’ moments that can be used at home, at the barn and the work place.
